Marble painting was originated in the 16th century in Rajasthan by the Rajput rulers. Marble paintings are highly ornate showpieces that are usually made in the craft schools of Kishangarh and Jaipur in India. The themes of the painting ranges from Indian deities, Mughal emperors and empresses, birds, animals, traditional symmetric patterns, floral patterns or scenes from Indian fables.
First, the base (marble) is prepared by applying a neutral color with sponge thoroughly. Then the sketch is made on it with a brush. The colors are then incorporated into the sketch. Gold leaves gold dust or gold-kundan meenakari work is used to embellish these paintings. Lacquer is then added for the sheen finish. These embellished, multi-colored paintings are available in a wide range of sizes, patterns and designs. Hand-crafted frames are sometimes attached to them.
