This Warli art painting is an ancient form of art from
the warlis tribe of Thane district in the state of Maharashtra, India. This art
form is famous for its use of geometrical designs even to draw humans and
animals. The most famous themes for this art is the daily village life, spiral
human chain and the chief gods of warlis like the sun, the moon, thunder,
mother goddess ‘Ai’, ‘Gavatri’ cow mother and ‘Kansari’ the corn goddess. The painting
is traditionally done with a white pigment (made of rice water) on brown
background (made of mud and cow dung).
