Mache is one of the oldest art forms being practiced in India. Papier mache is
the astounding transformation of waste paper into a spectacular, majestic, decorative
piece of art that is painted with intricate patterns by hand. This labor intensive art form was brought to
India by the Persians; it flourished in Kashmir valley where the knowledge has
been passing from generation to generation. . Its creation process has two
steps- Sakhtsazi (soaked paper pulp is grounded and mixed with an adhesive and
given shape) and Naqashi (meticulous hand painting requiring immeasurable
levels of finesse). Each piece is further lacquered to give it a shiny finish
and increase its lifespan. This art is
reflective of India’s glorious heritage and is a fusion of complexity of style
with vibrancy and color.
